Gas Works is a large district in New Marais, serving as its industrial zone. It is the last district unlocked in Infamous 2. Gas Works is the most dynamic district in New Marais, meaning that it can be affected the most by the player's actions.
History
With most of its properties owned by Joseph Bertrand III, Gas Works is where most of Bertrand's funds went to.
After their escape, Vermaak 88 took control of Flood Town. However, after being driven out of Flood Town by Cole MacGrath, the New Marais Police Department and the Rebels, Vermaak 88 moved into the powered down Gas Works and quickly took over the district. Shortly after, the Vermaak's numbers were cut by the powering up of Gas Works by Cole, and much of the district was destroyed by Bertrand during his final battle with Cole. Shortly after the death of Bertrand, Vermaak's numbers were again cut short after several battles with the remaining members of the Militia.
Features
Gas Tanks
The gas tanks of the Gas Works are extremely tall in size, and are mostly white with sporadic red stripe on them. The have three vertical Induction Grinds running up the side of the tanks, and they continue all the way to the top. When they are destroyed, they collapse in a fiery explosion that can physically harm Cole if he stands to close.
Walkways
Several walkways can be found around this district. They are yellow and can be destroyed easily by grenades or rockets.
Pipes
There are also pipelines found over the streets. They connect the tall Gas Tanks. These can be destroyed as well.
Warehouses
Warehouses can be found in many locations throughout the Gas Works. The walls and windows can be destroyed, but sadly, the buildings are unable to collapse.
Locations
Plague Ward
The Mobile Disaster Response Unit, Gas Works Park Division, also known informally as the Plague Ward, is an area located in the Gas Works industrial sector of New Marais. It is a converted warehouse where those who are suffering visible symptoms from the Plague are quarantined.
When Cole MacGrath teams up with Lucy Kuo and Zeke Dunbar to expose Joseph Bertrand he must infiltrate the railyard by passing east, through the powered-down Gas Works area, heading north, and then west. It is during this mission that the player is first introduced to the Plague Ward inside Gas Works and those suffering from the Plague.
In one of the final missions of Infamous 2, after John White reveals himself to Cole MacGrath and gives Cole the ability to see those infected with the Plague, John sends him to the Plague Ward to search for a Conduit. Cole uses his Pulse Heal ability to try and heal her, but fails. It is at this point that John reappears and reveals himself to be The Beast. He explains that he has the power to heal people suffering from the Plague, but only Conduits. He can heal and activate them by simulating a Ray Sphere blast that kills all humans nearby (which he justifies in the final evil mission by stating it helps to see them as already dead). He then proceeds to show Cole and activates the blast; healing the one Conduit by killing all the other patients in the Plague Ward, the warehouse is also destroyed in the explosion.
Ice tower
The Ice Tower was a large tower inhabited by the Vermaak 88, located at the Gas Works district of New Marais.
The tallest building in New Marais, the tower is an industrial building found in the Gas Works section of New Marais that has been covered from base to peak in ice to fortify it as a base for the Vermaak 88 while they carry out their operations in New Marais. Most of the Vermaak could be found at the Ice Tower, as it was the location where they kept their Blast Core.
During the mission Death Toll, the Vermaak 88 general places their Blast Core at the top of the tower in an attempt to harness the lightning from the occurring thunderstorm and activate the Blast Core. Cole retrieves the Blast Core by opening several valves on the tower and causing the top of the tower to catch fire in an explosion, melting the ice encasing the Blast Core. The top of the Ice Tower remains changed in this way for the remainder of the game.
