District
Ascension Parish

New Marais old part
City: New Marais
Status: Active
Based on: New Orleans
Appears in: inFamous 2
inFamous: Anarchy
inFamous: Festival of Blood

Ascension Parish was the southeastern district of New Marais, which was made up of several landmarks including, St. Charles Cemetery Leo Park and Fort Philippe. It was also the oldest and smallest district of New Marais and was, at one time, the jewel of the city, but when Cole MacGrath visits New Marais for the second time, Ascension Parish is nearly totally overrun with drugs, gangs and crime.

In Infamous 2, Ascension Parish was the second district that Cole unlocked and was a major stronghold of the Militia and the Corrupted. It would later become a Rebel controlled area, after Rosco Laroche and his men help Cole take over Fort Philippe.

Points of interest

West Lookout

The Rebel Outpost (referred to as The West Lookout by Lucy Kuo) was a location in New Marais, located in Ascension Parish.

When Cole MacGrath arrived in New Marais, several Militia soldiers were on this roof, protecting the first Blast Core, Cole was trying to collect. After defeating all the Militia and obtaining the Blast Core, the Rebel Outpost would sit empty for several days while Cole did several feats such as, rescue Wolfe and Kuo and power up the rest of Ascension Parish. After forming an alliance with the Rebels and accidentally revealing their secret headquarters, Laroche ordered for his men to take the Rebel Outpost as their new HQ. They would use the Rebel Outpost as their headquarters until they captured Fort Philippe. After the capture of Fort Phillipe, the Rebel Outpost would play no role in the storyline of the game, although it is always visitable. In Aftermath a Rebel or two can be seen on the Outpost occasionally, but this is very rare.

The Rebel Outpost has several key factors, including. Twin guard towers, a radio, several coolers, and several weapons boxes, meaning it was a small fort possibly for Bertrand if Fort Phillipe was taken. During the Rebel Occupation the Rebels use another guard tower on a different roof. The morning after the Rebels took over Fort Phillipe, if you visit the outpost, several pizza boxes and coolers can be seen in random places. During the Rebel Occupation, several Rebels are seen patrolling the roofs surrounding the Outpost, the reason for this is unknown.

The Rebels never captured the Rebel Outpost in the Evil karma side of the game, due to the fact that their first base was never compromised like it was in "The Hearts and Minds" mission.

In Festival of Blood, the Rebel Outpost does appear, but its guard towers have been removed.

Fort St. Phillipe

Fort 8

The fort

Fort St. Phillipe was heavily fortified stronghold occupied by Joseph Bertrand III and the Militia. It was Bertrand's stronghold or hideout, where he hid during certain dangerous situations.

The fort was surrounded by several groups of Militia soldiers and was littered with machine gun turrets and mortars. It was also where the Power Transfer Device was being stored, as Zeke Dunbar learned during his time with the Militia. In order to extract the device, Cole befriended Rosco Laroche, the leader of the local Rebels.

With the aid of Laroche and the Rebels, Cole, Lucy Kuo, Nix and Zeke initiated an attack on the stronghold. After destroying most of the turrets, the rebels invaded the fort. While some of the rebels went with Kuo to search for the Transfer Device, Cole and Nix continued the assault on the facility with the other rebels, and after a fierce battle, the group of allies were able to eliminate the Militia presence.

After Cole utilized the Transfer Device rebels disposed of the machine and made Fort Phillipe their main base of operations, even after Laroche follows Cole over to Flood Town.

Before being used by Bertrand, it appears to have been a museum: two closed-down ticket booths can be found built into the sides of the outer wall. The Fortress' primary armament is three 10-inch Disappearing Guns, based on weapons at Fort Casey in the state of Washington. These guns would normally be mounted on a turntable with a parapet in front of them, so the gun could retract into a safe position to be reloaded. By the door is a sign: FORT ST. PHILLIPE
Built at the onset of the War of 1812, Ft. Philippe (sic) saw heavy action during the Civil War, first as a naval defensive position and later as a safe haven for Confederate forces. In December 1864, Union forces besieged the fort and burned it to the ground. During this heroic fight, General Robert Bertrand bravely fell, becoming a martyr for New Marais.
This Monument and restoration is provided by the Bertrand family to commemorate the glory of General Bertrand, the heroes of his army, and those of New Marais.
November 1, 1996.

As shown above, the game also uses the spelling "Philippe," but the name on the sign over the main gate is "Phillipe," and this is also the spelling used in the subtitles. An interesting note is that among the Rebels patrolling the Fort, characters such as Laroche and Zeke can sometimes be seen. Zeke will only appear at the Fort immediately before leaving for Flood Town.

If one decides not to perform the two side missions within the area of the fort, which prevent Militia from spawning, they will continue to patrol the fortress even though the Rebels occupy it, thus fighting will ensue, which players can use to XP farm.

The newspaper box in UGC says: The SP News: Redesign of Fort Philippe. SP stands for Sucker Punch, another easter egg.

St. Charles Cemetery

Cemetary

St. Charles Cemetery

St. Charles Cemetery is a location within the district. Due to the plague, it had been overcrowded with coffins, resulting in corpses getting put to rest without any coffin.

This was where Cole MacGrath first found out about Lucy Kuo's Cryokinetic powers. It was also a place where Wolfe had hidden a Blast Core.

In Festival of Blood, Father Ignatius was also buried in the cemetery under the statue of the angel on the demon.

This section requires expansion.

Behind the scenes

  • Coding suggests that there was supposed to be a mission in which Cole would assist the Rebels take over the Outpost from the Militia, but was cut during development. A possibility for this might be that Sucker Punch wanted to keep the number of main missions down. Another possibility is that taking the Outpost itself might not have been important enough to the story, considering not one mission later, Cole assisted the Rebels in taking over Fort Phillipe.

Trivia

  • Ascension Parish shows many similarities to the Neon District in Empire City.
    • Cole has to unlock/power up 1/2 of the district.
    • It is located on the first of the two islands that make up New Marais.
  • There is an Ascension Parish in real life, but it's further inland than the area depicted in the game.
