The game begins moments after what is being called "the Blast", with the bike courier Cole MacGrath, in the direct center. With the help of his best friend Zeke Dunbar and girlfriend Trish Dailey, Cole recovers from his injuries and is suprised to find that he has developed electrical super powers. Two weeks later, he uses uses these newfound powers, alongside his parkour skills, to acquire a food drop crate stuck on top of Archer Square, and share it with the hungry citizens. The Voice of Survival then turns the city against Cole by telling them that Cole was the one who delivered the device that triggered the Blast. This severely hurts his relationship with Trish, as her sister died from the Blast. After trying to get out of the Quarantine with Zeke, Cole meets a DARPA agent named Moya Jones, who offers to free him from the Quarantine in exchange for the Ray Sphere Device and the location of her husband, John White. Moving from district to district, Cole manages to find John, who then sends him to get the Ray Sphere with Zeke. Zeke then betrays Cole, and activates the Ray Sphere to obtain powers of his own. It is also revealed that John is not Moya's husband, and that she only used Cole to track John down. During their hunt for the Ray Sphere, the First Sons' leader Kessler kidnaps Trish and forces Cole to choose between saving six doctors or his girlfriend. Cole chooses the former, and Trish plummets to her death, surviving a few moments to tell her how proud of Cole she was. After a few more excursions to find the Ray Sphere, John and Cole finally find the Sphere. At John's request, Cole attempts to destroy it, causing the device to collapse on itself and John gets sucked in, seemingly killing him. Set on avenging both John and Trish, Cole confronts Kessler at Ground Zero, and Cole manages to fatally wound Kessler. Through a vision however, Kessler reveals that he is in fact Cole from an alternate timeline, one that was destroyed by a Conduit called the Beast. Kessler came back in time to ensure that Cole was prepared to stop the Beast and had no attachments, like Trish, to hold him back. In the finale of inFamous, Cole considers what the future holds, still lamenting the loss of Trish and the strain on his friendship with Zeke.

In the finale of inFamous 2, after Cole gets all 7 Blast Cores, he joins rank with the Beast and they rampage through the streets curing all Conduits of the plague, also killing helpless civilians in the process. *In Second Son, several video monitors show the date as 2013, however, this isn't the in-game date, as that would not only be a major retcon, that would also mean the original games would be set in 2006, which goes against in-game images in Infamous and Infamous 2, instead it's assumed the dates on the monitor are a reference to the reveal date of Second Son. To back this up, the scene in-game is taken directly from reveal trailer (sans Delsin picking up a camera and stating "You are not in control.")

*In Infamous 2, it is stated there was a major flood in 2004 in New Marais, and Cole stated that four years prior to the game, he and Zeke had traveled down to practice parkour due to the flooded streets and lack of police intervention. Either Cole had miscalculated how many years it had been, there were multiple floods, or the water had simply not receded from the streets by the time of Cole's visit.
  +
*It is unknown why Cole, Zeke, and Lucy Kuo waited a month before making their way to New Marais. The dead drops suggest Cole was distrustful of Kuo, not just him being cagey around women due to Trish's recent death, but he had also been betrayed by another member of the government.
  +
*In the InFamous comics, Kuo tells Cole she worked with John White in the NSA, yet in Infamous 2, Cole asked who her contact was in Empire City, to which she told him again, that it was John, and Cole reacted surprised to this.

<References />
The whole story takes place some time during InFamous 2 but it is not stated when. The story is set in New Marias about the holiday known as "Festival of Blood"; which celebrates the demise of a vampire named Bloody Mary over a hundred years ago. It is mainly just a tale made by Zeke in order to impress a girl at a bar.
